If you have recently been looking into health and wellness, you’ve probably wondered what the differences between them are. No wonder, because they are very similar. However, throughout this article, we are going to drive into the differences between Wellness vs. Health to help you get a better understanding.
The World Health Organization (WHO) defines health as “the state of being incomplete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”
However, other sources on the internet define it as simply being free from illness or injury, meaning the definitions vary across the net. Overall, it includes ensuring you are free from disease, infirmity, and good physical health.
The Global Wellness Institute (GBI) defines wellness as the active pursuit of activities, choices, and lifestyles that lead to a state of holistic health .
We’d define wellness as an active process of making optimal choices for all dimensions of your life. These decisions go beyond the traditional sections of physical and mental health.
Although most people think that the terms are interchangeable, this is not the case.
The term health is usually used to refer to physical and mental health. However, the term wellness digs into your life in more aspects to create a good balance, such as being satisfied and comfortable with your life.
Wellness digs into further aspects of your body and mind, which could be your career, home environment, or anything else that is affecting your life and thoughts. It is the state of being incomplete physical & mental well-being.
For example, you could have good health but not have a fulfilling life because your career is not right. If this were the case, you would be in good health condition, but your wellbeing would not be good.
However, keep in mind that sometimes they can cross over, as they are linked to each other. For example, mental health is part of both Wellness and Health.
Anything that affects the state of our health is an area of health. Below, we’ve listed some example areas of health, so you can get a better idea of what is included.
Wellness goes beyond ensuring that you are healthy. One example that shows this is if you want to lose weight. In the health area, it includes losing weight if it is affecting your overall health. However, if you choose to lose weight simply because you feel more comfortable, this would be a sub-section of wellness, as it goes beyond your physical health.
As you can see, wellness dives into almost every aspect of your life. For example, health on its own would never look at your financial well-being, but wellness covers that too as it affects your wellbeing.
We hope this article has helped highlight the differences between Wellness vs. Health.
Remember that health is the goal of both of them, so they do cross-over in some areas. However, wellness is a dynamic process in making decisions in a wider variety of dimensions to ensure a balanced lifestyle.
